View Full Version : JET Stage 1 chip, Better Gas Mileage?

Hey there, just got my JET PCM Chip in today I got off eBay. I'm about to install it but was wondering if there is anything you guys can advise before I do. My goal is better gas mileage, as a $200 investment is low nowadays when it costs nearly $100 for a fillup. I've already purchased and installed a tornado device - had to punch out the honeycomb thingy to do it. It actually hangs where with the air filter is more than in the tube. I left the cold weather flapper in place - the tornado is a good 6 inches or so from it. Engine has a different sound to it and seems much more peppy, but don't know yet if I'm getting better gas mileage. I'm already happy with the performance of HP, again, gas mileage is my thing. I have a 4.2 6 banger, 2006 model. Should I be easy with driving after installing the JET or like one guy said: "Drive it like you just stole it" to break it in? There's no advice in instructions which to do. Thanks

Through out that POS tornado and put the honeycomb filter back on.

Well as far as the Tornado is concerned, there's a thread somewhere here that includes a link which directs you to a Consumer Reports review of "fuel saving" devices. One of the things reviewed was the Tornado, and I believe it actually lowered MPG and horsepower.
Most of the fuel saving devices are not worth anything, definitely not worth what you paid for them. I can't comment about the JET but it'll take you a long time to make up $200 in gas savings.
There are a few free mods that increase gas mileage slightly IMO. One is removing the cross bars on the roof. I have only noticed around .25-.5mpg increase but if you don't use them, what the heck? The noise level does drop though.
Don't carry extra gear. 200 extra pounds lowers your gas mileage slightly around town.
Avoid fast starts and stops. Harder to do when you buy a chip and want to "feel" the performance increase.
A/C use doesn't really hurt the TB/EN since the motor is powerful anyways. It is cheaper to use A/C on the highways then have the windows down anyway.
The other free mod is to maintain your vehicle in top condition. Not exactly free but most people maintain their vehicle anyways.

Im sorry to say man, the Tornados dont do anything in our trucks except take away hp and tq plus in a test by Popular Mechanics they say about a 13% decrease in mileage.
Dont bother with a Jet chip, get a Westers tune instead. Costs more, but they offer unlimited upgrades and if you sell the TB you can just send them the PCM back and get a tune for your new truck for free. Plus, the Jet chip will eventually become worthless as the PCM will slowly compensate for the changes it makes. With a tune, this is impossible as the PCM cant change back.

Make sure when plugging the Jet chip in that it is going in straight. There is a long pin in the chip that can break off if you put it in at an angle. This I know from first hand experience. Jet was nice enough to replace at no cost. Hope this helps.

But isn't the Jet Stage 1 actually a new PCM? Just curious...I was reading some info on their site and it said that there were no "chips" for later model TralBlazers, that it was a PCM.
Is this correct?

wow...taking out that MAF screen and putting in a Tornado?? Not a good idea. Wish you had found the site a little sooner, we could have warned you away from the junk. I have a Westers tune, Cai, and I removed the rack. I can get between 25-26 mpg on the highway. around town is right at 20 mpg. I am happy with this, it is after all an SUV!

The JetChip module is very similar to an ECM 'piggy-back' system. The module installs between the factory ECM and the wiring harness connections. They "ATTEMPT" to manipulate the sensor input signals and the device output signals to change the performance of the overall system.
Good luck with the Jet products. Let us all know what you think after about two weeks of use.

Yep, the Jet Chips are a piggyback module that goes inline between the PCM and the PCM connector.
No, they arent another PCM, the real tunes actually swap out or tune the existing data IN the PCM, so there is no way it could possibly go back to stock.

Any results from the Jetchip? Both stage 1 and 2. I am not impressed with their products/prices so far but I thought I would ask around.

Everyone I talked to said a chip that fit a 2005 TB would fit a 2006, but they were wrong. First person I talked to at JET Corporate also said the same thing, but after he talked to Tech Support, he came back and said they hadn't made a chip for 2006 TB yet. GM changed the module plugs in 2006. Anyway, the answer to your question is I don't know, my chip won't fit. Anyone want to buy a Jet Chip for a 6 Cyl? I think it fits 2002-2005, maybe more.

I had a jet chip stage 1... it was nice for awhile... but every 6months i took it out for a month or two ..then put it back in... the new cars are too smart and will compensate for the chip.... i just sold my chip and got a wester's tune... but as we all know i still am waiting for my computer to come back home:(
