Hey all,

Recently I have noticed this "popping" noise coming somewhere near the back of the truck. It sort of sounds like someone knocking on the plastic panels, and is completely random. Sometimes it happens when driving, sometimes when at a dead stop. It sounds like it is coming from inside the car. I even took all of my stuff out of the rear cargo storage spots and looked around inside the car to see if anything could have been hitting the plastic, but the sounds persists.

Anyone else had this problem?

Do you happen to have a hitch insert in your hitch? Mine tends to rattle at times.

Check to make sure your spare tire is tight and secure.

Check to make sure your spare tire is tight and secure.

I'd say either that or check for a loose exhaust hanger.

I don't have a hitch insert, but I did suspect the spare tire... I checked it by seeing if I could move it around, which it didn't. I will have to check that again though. I will have to check the exhaust hangar too. The weird thing is that I was in the car half the day today on a trip and did not hear it once.

The grab handle that you shut your liftgate with may also be the possible culprit

Do you hear this sound only when it's sunny outside, or only when the sun hits the rear of your TB? I've heard that sun shining on the part surrounding the license plate (the "pocket") causes it to expand at a different rate than the metal around it. This oilcanning effect causes popping noises as the plastic expands and then contracts when it cools.

Take a look at your rear plate, and if the seal or gasket around the edge of the license plate surround/pocket appears shrunken or pulled away then that is likely your problem. The dealer can install a new seal, but this would probably be easy enough to DIY.

I have noticed this noise only a couple time with my Envoy, but have read of it happening often to TB owners when they first back out of the garage in the morning on a sunny day.

Well as far as the license plate molding idea that isn't it because the noise happens sometimes even after sitting in the direct sun all day. Sometimes it is very annoying and will happen several times in a row and can be very loud. Other times it won't happen at all.
