LOL to this thread! You guys are great....
I should have clarified - there actually is a Part IV to this....and Chris has a role in it (as I'm sure he knows he and Kirk will be working their magic once again...) - a Vector Motorsports PCM retune. The other pieces to the puzzle really aren't any big secret or mystery - StainlessWorks longtube headers & a fairly mild cam to complement the heads & flowing exhaust. Headers are on order, much like many others have already done, and the cam is still being debated. Goal is to have this daily-driver (kid hauler) to run solid 12's with the stock converter...and my two kids' carseats in the back.
As of this weekend, the cam is spec'ed to be a 212/218 ~.560" (XE lobes) or ~.580" (XE-R lobes) lift, on a 114 LSA. This would give an IVC of 40, EVO of 43, and an overlap of -13.... But the LSA and advance are still subject to change, as I further figure out where this cam will peak at & if I really want to spin the motor that high. Might go to an IVC of 39 / EVO 45, but I'm really starting to split some hairs.
The AFR heads were an easy decision - small 205cc runner size with .200"-.550" flow rivaling most 230+cc ported LS6 heads. This means low-end torque will be much improved over ported LS1/6's, and oh yea, mileage ought to improve a li'l too. Yea, that's it...I bought them for the fuel economy.
Chris, you're welcome to come polish my heads whenever you want... :p Heck, feel free to etch a "Vector Motorsports" logo next to the AFR logo, too. And now that you're back in town....HAMLIN PUB!

The combustion chamber I'm going to leave at 66cc's, possibly a very slight mill to 65.5 cc's to get the DCR where I want it, along with a tighter quench. With the improved AFR heads & a spot-on quench, DCR can be up to ~8.75 and still be fine with 93 pump. The thinnest HG I am comfortable running is a .045" so depending on the DCR calcs (defined by what LSA I end up choosing), the heads may just get a very small wipe to reduce the CC volume. Nothing major, tho'.
Tune will definitely be a custom one; it will need a unique dyno/street tune. Maybe VMS will want to start offering a complete Heads-Cam-Headers-Tune all-in-one uber-combo...?

Not any more, unfortunately. I bought my 243's for my Firehawk for $750 (complete, w/ springs & valves) and I thought I had gotten a smokin' deal. Now, ~2 years later, NEW bare castings (243s) can be purchased for $385 a PAIR!
Even complete w/ springs and valves, our used LS2 243s won't fetch much more than $300, methinks.
Update on my "status": SW LT's have arrived. Taking them to get deburred and coated next week. Still haven't chosen a cam....

Really good gains. On the Hawk, my ported 243s flow 319cfm at .600", 2.02/1.57 valves.
Here's a snap of the SW-LT's. I am very pleased with their construction; my only real disappointment is the transition from the 3" collector to the 2.5" Y-pipe. I would have preferred to see these just have a 2.5" collector, and eliminate that sudden "step" in the tubing diameter. Sudden changes like that don't bode well for exhaust-flow.

I'm thinking about the same as you - 70rwhp/60rwtq. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll hit the magical ~85rwhp gain (ie, 500ish flywheel HP) with a couple other misc items, such as an U/D pulley etc.
Cam-wise, I still haven't chosen, but it'll be a 212-214 intake and have a 216-218 exhaust on XFI lobes...if I can ever get more info on the new XFIs. I'm onto a couple other side projects that have temporarily diverted my attention from the cam selection.
If this was a ricer forum, I would have claimed 150hp gains merely by having the heads & headers in close proximity to the truck.

I went through many jyrations with 4 different cam companies, I am putting together pretty much the same level of parts that you are and will buy the maggie the day it is available so my cam grind is for the supercharger but will work for someone that is going to tow with their truck.

Intake 224 degrees @ .050" Exhaust 228 degrees @ .050"

Awesome!!
Im new to the whole motor aspect of cars (heck, I only began seriously working on my TB in spring 05), especially for the LSx engines.
Looks like a good set of heads and a cam will net a lot of power for the buck, but how could it affect towing, if at all? Just talking about a head/cam swap, it shouldnt take away from the SSs ability to tow, it should help it though, right?
Mannnnn, I need to get in an 07 SS with about 5K to spend off the bat for all the mods I *need* to do asap!!!

Absolutely it'll help. Have a look at Todd's dyno curves. ~20-30 additional ft-lbs of torque on the low-end from tuning and cam/LTs. A good set of heads will add another 15+ ft-lbs on the low-end, and ~20-25 ft-lbs midrange...provided that the runner volume isn't huge. This is the MAIN reason I went with AFR heads - basically they have the smallest runner volume available for the LSx, and flow insanely well (still hit 300cfm). Comparatively, my ported-243 heads on my Firehawk flow 319cfm (IIRC), but they have a port-size about 30cc's *larger* than the AFRs. Flow vs. volume comparison, the AFRs *crush* my ported 243s in terms of efficiency.

02redhawk, your very knowledgeable and completely understand how to MATCH parts. I'm betting you'll get good #'s, and above average #'s since your doing it right. I'm sure down the road I'll do a heads/cam setup, but will stick with the 243's and have them ported by LLoyd Elliot(www.eportworks.com) and let Bret Bauer spec out a nice custom sleeper cam since I'll be on a budget. For now I'll enjoy similiar gains to what your getting for less....via the bottle. :)

Correct. Part II - Cam is "on the grinder", Part-III headers are due back from the coater later this week, Part-IV is secret & will be back in 2-3 more weeks, and Part-V the final PCM tuning will of course be done once everything else is installed.... Even though everything ought to be in within the next 3 weeks, its likely I'll hold-off for a while for the installations....but, all subject to change (esp if I get the 'itch' for more power sooner rather than later...).

What would be the point of installing them one at a time? You would have to tear the thing apart multiple times, tune it multiple times, and the rest of the system wouldn't be up to par with the new parts so it would be running funky.

Sorry, I don't like to do things piecemealed, pay for multiple dynotunes, have the truck "down" for 3x (or more) for long installs (as I do all installs by myself, in my garage), and do things half-arsed. I like to do it right the first-time, and I am extremely patient. If that means I have to wait a year so I can have everything the way I want it, then so be it. :)
I went down that road in the past, and I ended up paying waay, waay more in the end for the multiple times I had to purchase gaskets, bolts, PCM tunes, etc., for the various new-part installs than if I had just done it all at once.

ok, i can't stop looking at the picture of the heads. they should be on my counter this week, damnit! swap to start thursday night hopefully! i think i will end up ditching the k and n induction for one of chris's CAI so it looks more stock. now, how do i mask the heads and mute the lope in my exhaust a little better......:undecided maybe dual exhaust with a x-pipe :D
