All it takes is a ton of money but I guess anything is possible. Does this look a little familiar?
http://www.smithracecraft.com/gallery/galler24.jpg
They say is good for about 950HP on pump gas and runs the 1/4 in the low 9's.
Here are some threads about that car / engine.

I am speachless  That is what I am been thinking about all along. Look at the inline 6 for the Toyota Supra, it can handle 1000HP in stock form. Inlines have such a better balance  That pic has me drooling.

Yea that is definitely the way to take care of the 4.2 power issues. The size of the turbo is just crazy. I don't think the wife is going to go for that.

Don't say anything to her, chances are she'll never look under the hood. And you could blame the sudden burst of power on a great fuel additive. As for explaining the checkbook, well, you're on your own there! :rotfl:
damnit theres no more info on that site to wat kinda pistons, rods, crank, how to overcome the ecu, the list goes on. Damn tease.

Below is part of a thread relating to it. 675HP for a normally aspirated engine is pretty damn good.

Reply 4.2 DOHC in FBody
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Purple Car from the PSN belongs to a guy in South Texas named John Lively. He did the swap himself in 02-03. I bought the original '68 sprint motor he pulled from the car for the swap.
I have a photo of the OHC engine which he painted in that same funky Ford Purple as the car after rebuilding it but unable to post the photo.
If some one was interested in knowing more about the swap he seems the type that would answer questions. I know he did do some fabricating and had some issues with the electronics but ultimately sorted it out

That's cool, but for all the trouble, I'd have had to put in an LS1, LS2, Ramjet V8, or some other fuel injected V8.
Does anyone here think that car could smoke a GTO?

Hello All
In it's first race, the 4.2L was raced in Baha against a field of V8's.
It recieved the best performance award, and WON THE RACE against all the V8's
In race form it was rated at 675 H.P. at 7000 RPM's
I have heard that it is a monster on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb too.
So I would say that with some re-work over its stock 270 H.P. it could easily put out 400 H.P. (naturaly asperated) and smoke a GTO easily, might even do it in it's stock form.
Weight is the Enemy.
The OHC 6 is 200 pounds lighter than a Pontiac V8 of the era, and the 4.2L is lighter than the OHC 6.
Put it in a Firebird, and go blow some doors off.
Have Fun
John

More details would be nice but it seems like people are just starting to do major mods to these engines. I'm sure it wont be long before someone spills the beans and let everyone know how they did it.

Try copying the link location, opening a new browser window, and pasting the location in the address bar. What happens is the site doesn't allow you to get the picture if you are clicking a link from another site, as opposed to going to the picture directly.

OK- I know I'm new here, but I've talked to a few guys about that engine, as I'm building something very similar for my 68 Firebird. Self Racing built the engine for him; Glen Self is well known in the I6 world (and many others). I can't go into too many specefics, but the engine has made 1300hp at 20psi using some of the following:
Sleeved, 3.75" bore vice 3.66
Reworked stock crank
'special' rods, pistons purpose built for the turbo (well, duh!)
plenty of head work- raised exhaust ports (involves welding)
slightly bigger valves
reground cams with Jesel Ecotec followers (Ecotec, aka Saab design), cam phaser not used (timing gears locked, mine won't be)
obviously a hand-made intake and throttle body (Self racing)
a beefed up main girdle
and a decently sized turbo
PS- The Purple firebird is real; both of those guys are on my other website. I have more pics of both rides.

Its a shame, but I dont' see much potential for the amazing 4.2L if GM can't fit them into the 900 trucks, and it looks like they can't.
The 2009 Colorado better fit them, or they will be to costly to build. The 3.9L V6 GM has will have a spinoff in 2009 displacing 4.3 liters, putting out around similar power and fuel efficiency as the current 4.2L I6. This motor will probably be the base motor in a RWD chevy as it can be mounted that way. This means two things. The Trailblazer will have a new base motor, and there will be another RWD chevy with this motor- rumored to be the new Camaro. Note that the .2L upsize in the inline 6 motor (aka Atlas 6)has been canceled, but the 3.5 5cyld (atlas 5) will become the 3.7L soon.
That and the the fact that the new 2008 Trailblazer is rumored to be the same size (it will have a third row standard) means nothing good for the 4.2L 6. I expect them to be dropped, or the design to be sold (Toyota knows a good engine when they see one) in favor of the new 270hp OHV engine that is both more compact and cheaper. The uplevel engine in the new trailblazer will be a 320hp 5.3L V8 with Displacement on Demand. The small blocks cost less to make than the 4.2L 6, but with displacement on demand, I don't know if it will keep that advantage.
If however, GM can put the 4.2 in the 900 truck, doubling its volume, it can lower fixed cost on producing the motor in half. That is a good case to put the 4.2 in many less expensive products. I don't know what it will fit in, though.

dang 1300hp at only 20psi thats just mind boggling how hes getting that much power out of the 4200. Im assuming thats on c16. Any idea of how much that block ran:) . Good info.

The block actually didn't get much other than the sleeves & pistons... The sleeves run $100 and change each, while good turbo JE's or CP's will run you $500-600 a set.
If GM (Mahle) had just made the sleeves a little bit thicker...

wow is all i can say. So do u plan to run bs3, hold out for hptuners and use the stock pcm, or use a combo of hpt and megasquirt 2 when it comes out next year. Thats the biggest hurdle i think right now with 4200

I dont know much about that engine, it is an inline 6cyl engine with 250ci displacement, correct?
If so, then it is basically the same size as the 4.2L I6 offered in the GMT-360/370 platform which is 256ci displacement.

The old Stovebolt six was a great engine for the time.. Had one in my 68 Nova. But very different than the new 4.2L... the old 250 was a traditional OHV engine. Pontiac also had an overhead cam engine during that time as well.... But doubt there would be anything in common between them other than being inline 6 cylinders...

I'm currently running an Accel DFI gen VII (on one of those old Pontiac OHC motors someone mentioned). IF HPtuners comes out with any type of capability, I'll be on tha, too- as I'm helping with the swap of a few of these into a 65 Chevy II, a 56 Chevy truck, and another Firebird.
