Possible exhaust manifold leak?

I have researched many threads on this issue but im still not 100% sure maybe you guys can help?

Model: 2002 Chevy Trailblazer LS 4wd 4.2L

Symptoms:

1. Sounds like a tractor on startup, then sound disappears once it warms up

2. Slight odor of exhaust coming from inside the cabin (air vents)

3. Loss of power, My car runs at about 2,000 rpm just to go 45 mph

4. Hissing sound when I rev my engine

5. Some black soot build-up on some of the cables near the manifold

If you have any ideas please give me your opinion it would be greatly appreciated, Like I said I have looked at almost every thread on here about this issue I just wanted to post my own details on the problem and wanted to get your guys feedback, Thanks

Your pic did not come up on the thread but I would put money on your exhaust manifold being cracked had 2 crack on me so far and both times it had all of those symptoms every time I started it.

That just looks like oil or grease in the photos but I would still check the manifold mine is sitting here next to me and I don't have anything like that on mine but it has all of the symptoms you are describing!

Just took a closer look at your photo and compared it to mine and it is definitely oil and or grease except for the lower right hand side circle mine has some blackish build up on it in the same area but I do spray Simple Green and power wash my engine every time I change the oil so mine may be cleaner than most but I do have that black stuff near the lower right circle. But I think it is due to a slight leak in the valve cover gasket directly over that area it seems to have seeped out a little the last few months...I don't drive it much

Drove mine for like 4 months with the cracked manifold and it never stalled or anything so I think you have another problem with either your TPS or mass air

Problem Solved

Took it in yesterday and found the definite problem:

1. Catalytic converter was plugged up beyond belief

2. The cat was so plugged that it caused my exhaust manifold gasket to blow out.

Today I took it to remove the cat and replace it with just a pipe and WOW did I notice a huge difference, my car sounds pretty beastly right now and runs like a dream. Im fixing the gasket later on tonight.
