Power steering problems

Ok guys im having some problems with my power steering, im assuming i need to replace the pump but before i do anything id consult you.

Ok, my steering wheel is VERY hard to turn, especially at idle. when i get rolling it becomes a little bit easier to turn, but still some resistance. i looked up how to flush the pump so i think im gonna do that on my day off to see if that helps with anything. Do you guys have any suggestions on what it could be? also if it is the pump, how difficult would it be to replace myself?

The pump isn't too bad to replace; Three bolts and two hoses. You will need to buy/rent/borrow the tool to remove/replace the pulley. The three bolts and one hose are torqued to 18 ft. lbs. There will be less mess if you get as much p.s fluid out as possible, before disconnecting the hoses.

ok i was messing around today and i jacked up the front, started it and tried to turn the wheel. it worked fine, no problems at all. now my question is, is it possible that my worn front tires and the weight of the truck can cause my steering to be so hard when sitting still? i plan on replaceing the front tires in a few mins actually but i was just curious.

A few of us offroaders have 33-35" tires with MUCH larger contact patches, plus a couple hundred pounds of custom bumpers and winches in the front, and have no similar PS pressure problems or hard steering. I think it's your pump putting out low pressure or horribly old fluid.

Also as tires get older they get harder, so they would put less strain on the PS pump and be easier to turn.
