When you say you turn the HVAC off, what PRECISELY do you mean? I assume you have the digital controls? Even the manual controls are dual zone.
If you hit the "off" button, that's normal. The fan goes to zero, but movement of the vehicle will blow air from outside through the ducts. And the temp control doesn't do anything. Just don't turn the system off. It's designed to be always on, to keep control and dehumidify the air so your windshield doesn't fog up.
What would make you want to turn the system off? If you just want the AC compressor to go off, hit the snowflake button.
If the fan bothers you, you can take manual control of just that by hitting the speed buttons on the left.

same but different
My 04 Lt Ext has 3 actuators in the dash. Two have the letter 'S' on them and the other is 'HL'. But I have to take off the entire dash to get to it. I can see it, but without removing the dash I cant get to it. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, digital and I hit the off button. The temperature controls do make a difference. Before I turn the system off, If I have the heat on the highest (90?) the floor still pumps out some really hot heat. If I move it digital temp control lower then turn off the system, the temperature drops to the setting that it's on. If this is normal, I'll have to figure out a way to reroute the lower duct, so it doesn't blow directly on my feet.

Understood. This is new to me, but I love to learn more about the systems. But again - why turn it off if the uncontrolled behavior annoys you?

You just jumped in here without explaining WHY you need to get to them. Did I miss something? Members have reported changing them without removing the entire dash, but sometimes you have to fabricate a very shallow ratchet tool or have very tiny fingers. Which one of the five actuators are you having problems with?

I replaced my Mode Actuator a few days ago on my 2002 Envoy SLE. Dealer quoted $66. Rock Auto was half that. The only tricky part of the installation was that the new part was in a different position so it would not go on the shaft. So I looked at the back of the old one, hooked the new one up electrically and fiddled with the controller knob until the new part was in the same position as the old part. BINGO! It went right on and the job was done. After 3 days - its still all good!
I did a post mortem on the old part and found 1 tooth missing on the big gear. I didn't know if that gear actually spins a full turn or more. If not, lifting it out and re-positioning the broken tooth at the far side could have saved time and money. Any way, I'll save the old bones just in case this happens to one of the other actuators. Those flimsy gears can possibly be replaced.

HVAC Actuator Stuck on Shaft
Starting changing the mode actuator on my 2002 GMC Envoy, I have the two mounting screws out but the actuator will not slide off the shaft. Can't see the end of the shaft, is there a screw in the end of the shaft holding the actuator?? Any suggestions??
Thanks for any help provided!!

It's a tight fit, but a member posted pics of a tool he fabricated to push the shaft out. Did you see those pics? Others just wiggled it very, very carefully off the shaft.

IIRC there are 3 screws and none in the end of the actuator shaft. You will need to get the 3 screws out. I found the best tool was a 1/4" ratchet wheel with a 7mm socket. The ratchet wheel is a palm ratchet by another name.
Good Luck.

Don't know about other model years but the 2002 has only 2 screws. The actuator will come off with gentle but persistent persuasion. Remember, the new actuator probable won't be in the same position as the old one. I hooked up the new one electrically and fiddled with the front knob until the new actuator was in the same place as the old one. Then it mounted right up. I also put some white grease on the new one just in case it ever has to come off again.

This thread is great and got me pointed in the right direction for everything. As has been mentioned many, many times, the 2002 trailblazer actuator requires a tool to remove in most cases. I saw a thread on making your own puller tool from flatstock which looks perfect if you have a drill press and vices to bend the flatsock. If you don't I found that you can make one with an anchor shackle, a bolt and a dremel in about 20 minutes for about $5.50 with parts from Lowes.
I posted a thread on it. Hope this helps as this forum has saved my butt many, many times already.
