update to low oil

'02 LS TRAILBLAZER, 192,xxx miles. Apparently it's been low for a bit and I didn't realize it; we don't drive it much. There's no obvious leaks, so I'm assuming it's burning it causing it to be low.
The "check gages" light comes on from time to time, and all the gages go to zero for a second, then come back. Now, the same light comes on, and the oil pressure needle drops out. If I give it a little gas, it comes back up. To add to the problem, when I checked the oil last night, the dipstick isn't showing any oil. there was some on it when I pulled it out, but none after I wiped it clean. When I got home (I babied it), it occasionally ran rough, and also occasionally clattered/knocked. I shut it off right away. It never ran hot, according to the temp gauge.
I'm going to change the oil and filter this week, and cross my fingers.
I know it's all guesses, but have I just blown the engine?

UPDATE: I changed the oil, and it seems to run a little funny, doesn't upshift like it used to.
Once it warms up, the oil pressure gauge bounces up and down. what causes that?

Put a mechanical gauge on it to confirm the problem, it might be the dash gauge itself.
If not, it's internal engine.
Any knocking noise from the engine (bad bearings, etc.) it needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

If you take it for oil change, some places put only 5 quarts in (it needs 7 quarts) which would be a reason to low. But my gauge did that with full oil and replaced the sensor (by the oil filter) easy to change and no more problem, but if you have knocking depending where that is how much needs to be rebuilt.
