03 Fuel Gauge Stepper Motor or Fuel Level Sensor?

1) No codes
2) Fuel gauge reads "Full" at off, and jumps to about 5 o'clock position at on and stays there.
3) Digital readout of mileage range does not change (stuck at 300 miles).

My intial thought was stepper motor, but then when I noticed the digital readout of the range was not decreasing, I am now assuming most likely fuel level sensor.

Correct assumption?

Stepper motor or fuel level sensor? What difference does it make? If you know what the worst mileage you ever got was multiply that by number of gallons the tank holds and fill up 50 miles before that figure. Total cost $ 0.00 If your reset odometer is also not working you are screwed.

More seriously, when my fuel level sender went bad I had a different set of symptons than you are describing. My mechanic (independent, not dealership) told me he could electronically send a signal to the gauge to make it think there was any quanity of qasoline in the tank. When the gauge responded as it should that is how he diagnosed the sender was at fault.
