Ball Joint questions. Removal of hub.

I read the sticky write up on changing the upper and lower ball joint and it makes it seem as if it can be done without removing the hub assembly in the initial post. Later in the thread someone posted an additional write up that includes removal of the hub. Can the upper and lower ball joints be replaced without removing the hub?
Thank you for any advice you have.

TY. It seems like this can be done without removing the hub. I am still alittle confused about removing the axle nut or not. I saw in a picture that the upper can be done with the axle connected ,but I could not find and information about the lower. The thread that is stickyed looks like a 2wd and the "lower ball joint replacement" thread is 4x4 but is not specific on how to get to the lower and there are no pictures. Any help on What needs to be removed to change the lower ball joint on a 4x4 would be great.
