Cal Err ...I am Furious!!!

Man, I have been pissed before but this is the kicker. I took my TB back to the dealer because the paint on the radio was chipping off. They said we will replace it and ordered me a new one.

Wednesday, They call me and tell me to bring my TB there and they will install the radio. That evening, They cant figure why it is flashing an error on the screen but they will have to keep it. Sounds fishy so I go to the dealership after hours it is setting in the lot. I use my spare and open the door and start it up. Radio Displays "Cal Err". I lock it back up and leave. I come home and look on the net and find that the error means the dealer needs to program the radio to work with the rest of this system.

Today is my daughters birthday and I wanted to take her to the Olive Garden for dinner "Her Favorite" So 3pm day Two I call and they tell me that the new radio was broken and they have to order a new one. I could come and get the car but it will not have a radio. I am so pissed off right now I just don't even know what to think.

Can some one clue me in on what could be so hard about installing a radio? I read another thread about it here and all the guy did was take it in and dealer fixed it, WTF This just seems like a load of BS to me. I don't think the radio was broken I think they don't know how to calibrate it.

now I might not be thinking very clearly right now but cause I am Extremely Irritated.

PS its the 6 disc bose unit.

Not that this really helps with your situation, which sucks BTW, but the radio on my mom's 04 Envoy SLT (regular CD player) had the paint chip off the volume knob a few months ago. Dealer replaced the whole thing. She is very easy on her cars (only about 25k on it since she got it new 12/03), which is why I found it strange. Does anyone know if this is a common issue?

I do believe it is a common issue. They never hesitated to offer to replace it just getting them to do it is the challenge.

Paint is chipping off my volume too. It is noticeable at night and is annoying, but there is no other button that is having this problem. Maybe it is an epidemic.

Sounds like all they needed to do was hook up their Tech 2 and recalibrate the radio to your truck.

As for the paint chipping dealeo, I have it on my volume knob, track button, and the preset 1-2 button. Degrees vary from extreme (<50% on volume) to minimal (<10% on the 1-2 button).

BTW, you can order the buttons seperately for about $25 shipped from specmo.com. Email them and they will hook you up.

why spend money on aftermarket that you dont need in the first place. The dealers replacing it for free.

Exactly, I have owned some nice head units and I would never consider replacing it. Hell it would cost me 1000+ to get a unit with the same features, if even possible because if the rear seat controls.

A new radio will also display "Cal Err" if it is not able to be programmed, which can happen if its memory is corrupted or there is a hardware issue which prevents the re-flash.

Dealers these days are pretty familiar with the need to program electronic modules, like radios, which are replaced in service. I'd be willing to bet the replacement radio really was defective, and the dealership wasn't able to program it...
