p0442 error code - help

This is my first post, hope I am putting it in the right spot. I have an '03 Envoy 6 cylinder with 39k miles. Recently received the service engine soon light and the reader showed error code P0442 which I have found to be and EVAP emissions control leak small. I need help diagnosing the exact cause of the problem.
Thanks.

Most common cause is a loose or faulty gas cap. Sometimes the check valve in the gas cap doesn't seat properly allowing the gas tank pressure to bleed down. The EVAP system needs to see a positive pressure in the tank.

Maybe Gas Cap

Here is a quote from autotap.com
"One of the most common codes that results from a loose gas cap is P0440."

Might check the gas cap.

Should have mentioned this earlier, but I checked the gas cap already and that's not the problem.

If you are positive the cap is good and only the "small leak detected" code persists, you'll have to sniff around for fumes (the leak). The 'charcoal box' and associated tubing is under the truck above the spare tire. The purge solenoid is under the intake manifold and the vac line routes to the throttle body. Those are listed on the under-hood EVAP schematic sticker. You could also have a leak on/around the tank or filler as well.

Well, then you're going to love this exploded view drawing. #4 is the purge solenoid, #7 is the vent, and #14 is the canister (on the first drawing for the short wheelbase vehicles, and the second drawing for the EXT/XL they're slightly different)

I had this same code on my wifes 03 EXT. Bought the evap vent solenoid valve (part #7 in the second drawing) for 40 bucks at the dealer. Climb under the truck next to the gas tank and swap out took 5 minutes. Disconnect the negative terminal to clear the code and then drove home an hour tonight and still no code so this i think fixed it. Thanks to this site it saved me a bunch of money from my dealer. Funny thing is i just changed the same part on my 07 Tahoe last week.

evap leak

Is it really a big deal? I mean does does it mess with your gas mileage at all or what? I still have the code but I do not want to pay dealership to find the leak and charge me an arm and leg. I already changed the Gas cap with a GM part and still have the problem show up after resetting the system.
