Clarification on Fuel Filter Change

I've searched over the forums, and noticed that this topic has been covered to some extent; however, most of the topic has been how to change pre 2005 models. I guess supposedly the Fuel Filter on the 05-up has been put in the tank, so it's non serviceable. If so, how come it still claims to service the Fuel Filter every 25k mi in the 2005 TB Owners Manual. I searched Parts America for a fuel filter on an 05 as well as 06 and they actually have a filter listed. So what gives? I really don't want to go to the stealership and get ripped when I don't need this service done, let alone come off as a non car knowing guy they can take to the cleaners.

2005+ 4.2's have pretty much a completely different fuel system than 2002-2004's. 2005+ use a variable speed fuel pump with no return line and no fuel pressure regulator. I belive they call it a 'pulse width modulated' fuel pump where the PCM regulates the voltage to the pump based on engine load. With different plumbing and hardware, I'd have to say the filter is different as well and probably in the tank somewhere. I *assumed* it was a sock on the pump p/up, but I have yet to verify this.

Went to NAPA this afternoon, and asked for the Fuel Filter for my TB. According to the guy at NAPA, it's still the canister style type. I decided to hold off until I made sure that mine was not in the tank.

If the supposed 2005 filter napa has looks like a 2002-2004 fuel filter, it aint right. There is no inline filter to be had on a 2005. I've looked on mine...

Thanks for the input Joel,

I'm going to change my oil today. While I have it up on the lift, I'll check to make sure mine doesn't have the fuel filter located on the rail. I talked to my local chevy dealer; they told me some of the early model 2005's still have the external replaceable filter. My vehicle was built in late Feb 05, so I'll check.

Napa is the same one that sold me a PCV valve for my I6 Trailvoy

For those who don't know, Trailvoys don't have on for the I6 (not sure about the others)

AC Delco # is GF831. Take a look at the link and see if you recognize it.

That listing came up for an 05. Probably is early production as you have said

I just did a serch on the AC Delcom site for a 2005 TB and they do not list any fuel filter. But is I select 2004 then the can style filter shows up.

They stuck it in the fuel tank.

Cool

I too am pretty sure its in the tank, but i used the gm parts lookup software here at my parts warehouse and it said "may" fit 05. I only posted the link to the pic to see if he recognized it. Chances are he won't because its not there.
