Check Engine & Reduced Engine Power Light came on WTF!!

Ok... I live in North Dakota and yesterday it was -30 degrees out!!! I have a block heater so the mornings have been alright, but at work i cant plug the voy in. After a 12 hour shift and being -17 degrees out all day, i went to start the voy and it started really weird and the check engine and reduced engine power light came on!!! I let it warm up for 10 min and then shut it off. I started it and the reduced engine power light shut off but the check engine light remained on. My question is... has anyone experianced this and know what it means? I was also wondering what the engine is doing when that light is on, because it didnt want to rev-up, just wanted to idle.

Usually, when the RP light comes on with the SES light, it's a throttle by wire issue. Especially if you have no/limited throttle response. Maybe the accellerator pedal position sensor (up above gas pedal) got wet? Other than that, the motorized actuator and throttle position sensor is built into the throttle body itself.

I had the same thing happen to my TB. I live here in Northern Minnesota. The problem on mine was some moisture got into the resonator box and froze and after it ran for a while it was fine, but you might want to pull the resonator box off and check if there is any ice in there. Just an idea.

Hey Joel,

Does the throttle by wire run through a check at start up?? I mean does it actually move the throttle a little and verify position? I would think if it was really cold and their was a little moisture around the actuator( and it froze) it might not be able to verify its postition and throw a code and the RP light. I ask cuz mine did this once after being driven in a nasty ice storm then being parked for many hours. Once it warmed up, I restarted it, and everything cleared up..... almost everything. The window washer fluid stayed frozen for 2 days.

Ghoster, I'm sure it goes through some type of self diagnostics for safety reasons. Dunno how or what though. I know the accelerator pedal position sensor and the throttle body position sensor have to match positions (stay calibrated) or the system will basically s/d and throw the engine into reduced power mode. Like you say, a extremely cold TB may stick. If it sticks, the sensors wont line up, truck goes in reduced power mode.

Short version - most likely your PCM or "computer" is bad.

http://forums.trailvoy.com/showthrea...ght=p0601+code

Edit: It would help us if you included the year of your vehicle and the engine especially in your user profile.
