I have a tapping sound in my TB's I6!

Actually, it might be a lifter? I don't know - it's got full oil, and taps pretty noticeably when warm and cold. It's a 2003 TB 4.2 I6 with 104k... any thoughts, any feelings, any suggestions? I'm not much of a mechanic but I am not intimidated unless something is very complex.

We don't have lifters as such. Mine taps too. Its mostly from the fan clutch. Though the injectors can be a bit noisy.

There are actually hydraulic lifters in this motor; but their called Valve Lash Adjusters

Anyway, There are a couple of bulletins related to Valve Lash Adjuster noise, but it's not common to see them fail. The more probable source of your noise is your fuel injectors ticking away. It's been noted by some other members that the plastic intake (on our trucks) actually amplifies this noise. Get a piece of small hose or a long screwdriver and place it up against your ear; put it up against each injector and listen. You'll probably find a few of your injectors are really noisy...nothing to be too concerned about.

Let us know how you make out

try to narrow down where the tapping is coming from.. If it is coming from the intake, it could be your injectors

I have a similar problem and I have seen this injector explanation a few times. How loud would the injectors actually tap? I can easily hear a tap under acceleration and at idle especially if my windows are closed. Would the volume of the tap change with engine temp similar to a valve/lash adjuster tap? Thanks.

tapping

I had to have my exhaust manifold gasket replaced. Made one hell of a difference.

My 2002 Envoy's I6 (99,800 miles) has a very loud tick that comes and goes. Its normal... we have a DOHC setup with clicking fuel injectors and a fan clutch that loves to
b!tch at us...lol
