Shifting into Park...NOT

Hi All-

First time poster here, hoping someone can help me out...

i have an '04 TB EXT 4WD, this afternoon it did not want to shift into park and would just roll without the brake. i finally got it to shift into park. would like to have an idea of what may be wrong before i take it into the shop. hoping it is not the tranny.

if you all need anymore info please let me know.

all help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Someone else had this problem. As it turned out, a pen or something had fell into the console in front of the shifter and would not let it go all the way forward. Check this first.

My best guess would either be the shift linkage, or something electrical/sensor related. Something either not throwing it into gear, or not recognizing it is in fact in gear.

Yeah, there is a lot of linkage in today's cars. The shift/brake interlock is probably the problem. I've not had the pleasure of tearing into this area, but between the brake pedal and the shifter there is linkage to prevent someone from pulling the vehicle into gear if the foot is not on the brake. Some cars (not sure about TBs) also tie in the ignition key. If u have something jamming this linkage, u prolly won't get into park.

this happened in my ford tbird. a nickel was caught in the shifter mechanism.

I had a similar prob but minemade alot tf noise in reverse. It was the transfer case, but mines an 02. sounds more like a nickel or pen stuck in the way
