P0442 code on low gas level

I have noticed several times now that my TB throws a P0442 code when the gas level is below 1/4 tank, indicated. There are no other codes or data available. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Check your gas cap for cracks maybe? Fuel lines and fuel filter.

There is a bulletin addressing this code:

Quote:
It is possible that a fracture as small as 0.508 mm (0.020 in) may be found in the fuel tank filler neck, causing a DTC P0440, P0455 and/or P0442 to set. Due to the location above the liquid fuel level, this small fracture will not cause a visible fluid leak.

The technician should pay particular attention to the fuel tank filler neck area while performing the smoke test
Also...do a search for this code; there has been many posts about it in the past

Small EVAP leak troubleshooting

I am also getting a P0442 (Small EVAP leak) on my 2004 TB EXT. I bought an Actron CP9180 Scanner (good excuse to buy another tool!) to help me determine why the SES light was on. I have read all of the posts on this subject, and most of them point to the gas cap, filler neck, or a cracked hose. My "Freeze Frame" data when the last trouble code was sent is:

Frame 1 Mod $10
TROUB CODE P0442
ABSLT TPS % 23.5
ENG SPEED RPM 994
CALC LOAD % 50.5
MAP KPA 45
COOLANT F 190
IAT F 75
IGN ADVANCE DE 24.5
ST FTRM1 % 7.0
LT FTRM1 % -8.0
ST FTRM3 % -58.0
LT FTRM3 % -30.1
VEH SPEED MPH 1
FUEL SYS 1 CLSD
FUEL SYS 2 N/A

Does anyone see anything in this information that would help me narrow down the search for the leak? I have already tried a different gas cap. So far, I have not smelled any gas either.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

If you've changed the gas cap, and the code comes back, then you will have to have a Tech take a look at the EVAP system for leaks...

Be aware though...there are a lot of shops out their that are not properly equiped to diagnose EVAP leaks; and those that are don't necissarily know how to use the equipment properly

The best way to diagnose this is with an EVAP smoke machine and a scanner that's capable of commanding the system closed...then, it's just a matter of locating where the smoke is leaking out of

BTW...the freeze frame data you posted doesn't help much with this code

I was afraid of that! Thanks for the input, though.

For now, I will probably just check for obvious signs of cracked hoses and "sniff" around for gas leaks. If I don't do anything, will this leak cause any other problems, or is it just a pollution issue?

Thanks again.

Just as an FYI,
I finally brought the vehicle to the dealer for some other stuff and asked them to look into the P0442 codes. They wound up replacing the gas tank (under warranty). Several fill-ups later, it has yet to throw a code.
Thanks to all who responded to the initial query.
