Changing Transmission Fluid

Hello All,
This is my first post. I want to change the transmission fluid in my 04 Envoy. There is no drain plug so I will need to drop the pan. I know that will only get 4-6 quarts, but will I see a difference in the color of the fluid after I add the new fluid.

Is there anything I need be aware of?

Check out this post. I did this service to mine in May. Very easy to do.

Mark.

my tranny had some work done to it at around 72,000. so at that time it had new filter and fluid put in.
Im close to 113,000.
Thats about 41,000 miles ago.
Since I may be taking a trip down to Guadalajara in 3 weeks- im getting her ready now. Im waiting for engine oil light to come on (close to 10K on oil)so I can change that, and just redid thermostat, and changed out rear end fluid.
gas filter is next with oil change.
so I read the article on changing the fluid. Very descriptive.
But I will pass on doing this one myself.
I have grandma visiting- so we go places, doggy needs to get to vet tommorrow, and by chance- gf had the day off today- and I didnt carpool with dad today................
SOOOOOOOOO
got up at 530- gf came over at 545 and we went for a 4 mile run, then took my TB in to get the fluid flushed only- all 12 qts. (dealer is about 1 mile away)
the filter will be changed in 10,000 miles or so.
gf drove me into work this morning.
Things just lined up and I was able to drop it off and have the fluid changed.
Its somewhere around $150 for the flush with machine.
But considering its 12 qts- id hate to spill 12 qts on the driveway....
but there was more + for having it done by dealer while im at work....than doing it myself during the weekend. In this case being without the trailblazer is not worth $150 + all the other headaches associated with the fluid and disposal and clean up etc.......

I think this is one of those jobs that you have to weight in factors like downtime, supplies, possible messyness, etc.
when I was 16 we changed out the tranny im my 70 monte carlo with a junkyard unit. man- everytime I smell tranny fluid- it reminds me of being 16 and working on my 1st clunker. BTW- 18 yrs later- its in my garage under a car cover- only comes out when it goes to car shows every 5 months or so.

I did the flush last weekend using the article mentioned above. I layed down a cheap tarp and drove over it so if anything spilled I would be able to clean it up instead of having it go everywhere. I ended up running 14 qts through to get the fluid to a color I was comfortable with. If you have the time it's well worth it and much cheaper even if you want to switch over to all synthetic fluid.

I always save my used car oil and take it to Haz. Waste Roundup.
But im short in space for another 12 qts.

everytime I go- they have the "OIL BIN FULL" sign.
So I just store it till the roundups take place.
Sometimes I wonder if they really are full.

I take my used oil to pep boys and they always let me dump it, kragens will take it also went there once, I usually take my rigs to a shop and have them install new tranny fluid with their machine and then I drive it home and drop the pan and replace the filter and add a few quarts to top it off.

Just wondering which fluid everyone is using and/or recommends for my wifes 05 EXT LS 4X4 TB?

Thanks for the help.

I guess I should have mentioned that I know it's Dexron III, just wondering what brand. Thanks again

Wayne
