I have an 08 Trailblazer: this morning...

both stabilitrak lights came on. I drove the vehicle around the block and they remained on. Pulled back into the driveway and turned it off. Turned back on and both lights still on. Then backed out of driveway and drove it short distance and both lights stayed on and back into driveway. Turned engine off off again and back on. At this point both lights went out. Drove 15 miles to work and back with not problems. Vehicle drives fine. I just had some work done on the vehicle...replaced ignition switch and battery. I noticed when I got the vehicle back the steering wheel seemed slightly off center. I am having no problems driving the vehicle and the light did not come back on when re-cranked again as a test. All this has happened just today. Anybody have ideas. Was this just a fluke? Should I just drive it longer to see if the problem happens again, take it to the shop? any help appreciated. Thanks

There are a couple other threads on this... I forget the exact problem but its like a sensor or somethin.

Mines been doing it this past month every so often... but every time I restart it it goes away. And even when I drive it with the lights on I notice no difference in driving.

I just don't want to get raped at the stealership... to get it fixed.

I called the local Chevy dealer today....

A sensor costs $150 bucks and the steering column must be broken down to replace it. sounds like about a $400 job or there abouts. They want $55 to just do a diagnostic. He said if the light keeps going off to ignore it for now, as it may just be a glitch. He wanted me to bring it in as he said "it could be covered under warranty". Vehicle has 42K miles so it is out of warranty. He said that something remain in warranty that may cover this. I think it is just a hook to try and get me in. I imagine for right now I'll just do noting and see what happens, since the lights do not remain on so far. Man I loved this 08 and then the warranty expired and it seems to be one little glitch here and there, of course $400 is more than a glitch to me.

Grrrr.

I'm trying to figure it out without dealership intervention. It's fine if the light is on and I'm driving on dry roads, but of that light goes on while it's trying to engage traction control, it will stall dead. I've noticed as well that there's a huge power draw when the traction control engages.

Hey everyone,

I have a 2006 TB LS 4wd and my Stabilitrak Service lights are coming on the same as described here. A friend of mine was in the car when it happened and he told me about his Toyota Sequoia that had the same problem. His lights came on randomly, would reset when the ignition was turned off, then not come on for a while, then eventually they stayed on. He thought there was a problem with the Stabilitak system and took it in for service. They were unable to figure out the problem. It turns out, his vehicle was several years old and needed new brakes installed. They were worn down enough that the Stabilitrak system was sensing it as a problem. He had new brakes put on, never did anything to reset the computer or anything like that and the lights never came back on.

My TB has 53,000 miles on it and has the original brakes on it still. I am going to wait for the next warm day here in Cincinnati, OH and pull the wheels and check the brakes. We live in a very hilly area and the brakes get used a lot.

Does this make sense to anyone else? Thanks for all your insights.

Wow, what is their hourly rate? According to the labor manual replacement is .9 hour for out of warranty and .6 for in warranty. If you are correct at the $400 figure then they are getting $250.00 per hour.

That is very interesting.....

The 400 bucks included parts and labor. I just generally take what the service people give me. I guess I need to look a labor more closely. Where are you getting the book rate? That sounds like a good thing to know the next time I have repair work. Why am I thinking that shops are charging more than the normal repair price? makes you go huummm.

Since I posted this problem I have had no more warning lights come on. I guess the problem was some kind of glitch??? Never experienced any problems with the vehicle though.

Thanks for the tip.

I got my info from Alldata. They are pretty accurate on labor rates. After reading the procedure I can understand that it shouldn't take much more than an hour to do the job. The last time I went to a dealer was to get my K3500 truck reprogrammed for oversized tires. They came over with the tech 2 and it took about 5 minutes to do. That cost me over $90.00 for the labor, administration fee and a environmental fee. When I questioned the environmental fee they claimed the paper disposal when the work order is entered in the computer. I paid it and haven't been back since. I even take the Envoy to a different dealer. I'm just about done with that too as I have had enough and am seriously considering trading the pos off.

Do only vehicles with Stabilitrac have Steering Wheel Position Sensors?

Not sure but I believe so. The stabiltrak system relies on steering position, yaw and brake sensors to determine the vehicle position. I would see no other reason for the steering sensor.
