Excellent Post.....Here's what I install. Black clip goes above the hole in the headliner and visor is mounted below and placed into hole from the cabin side upwards.

1. two people for task: if not already done, dis-assemble the wire to separate the wire for the mirror. Remove the small gray clip from the end close towards the wiring harness...not the one close to the visor assembly side. Remove clip, tiny do not loose. Next take a Jeweler flathead and slighty pry up the side of the connection, located on the same end as the will see on the side and top of it...pry up and pull and it will come apart.

2. The black retainer clip is best removed by snipping the top legs at the center you will see a crown....cut off if needed these legs have the detent lips that snap the unit to the Center post to lock EVERTHING in place.....remove the top and then snip the circular ring right above the hole...the unit will come right off.....if retainer ring is already off next step 3.

3. Place visor parallel to the front windshield and put the assembly into the
hole in the headliner.....prior doing this.....align the visor assembly in this manner: rotate the assembly with the pin in the hole rotate the white locking ring in the assembly to the open will see the white ring retract inside the the back retainer GM Part #88939682 this is the Left Drivers Side Early snap fit type.

IMPORTANT PART: The first thing you want to do is rotate as above....the black clip will need to be pre-set as to where the legs go into the assemby.
The middle leg does not fit into the slot where the wire for the mirror is imbedded its the slot right next to it. Remember is counter to the obvious.....

4. Place assembly into the headliner hole, have a friend hold it steady, take the black retainer and place on top of opposite headliner hole, that would be the inside facing the roof, then run the mirror wire through the black the retainer legs into the correct slots, make sure to look underneath as the placement of the assembly or angle of it is correct.....
You will note before you "snap" the black retainer it will be at 1:00 O'Clock from the top not worry it will, seat itself correctly. Press down with your fingers holding the base of the retainer ring and the very top of the retainer, at the same time pressing the assembly, once you have the retainer aligned and the base ring in place press with your hand the assembly of the visor and press down on the very top of the ring and it will snap together....the very top of the retainer, it looks like the top of a cone, under this are the legs with the ability to clip onto the assembly center shaft...that's why these are a bitch to get as you press rotate the visor towards the window slowly....then put the pin in the hole rotate back towards the windshield the pin will move up and then the unit will snap into place as you press down from the top downward on the unit....pull the pin out when it clicks/snaps into place and your finished......

Rotate back to the door and then back to windshield and lock up...if your pivot assembly is loose fitting then the visor assembly is probably mauled. The clips on the rotating base, look closely at them on the visor assembly if they are broken or mauled you will need a new visor they are $239 ned from GM.

Hope this helped.
