Timing chain noise? 2002 170k miles

Hi Folks. 2002 LTZ 170k miles. I started noticing some noise from the engine area. Definitely a worn-out type noise. I thought it may be the idler bearing or belt tension pulley (which ever is the proper description). I squirted some WD-40 on it and still had the noise. I listened around a bit and it sounds like it possibly could be under the front timing chain cover. Any way to tell for sure before I take the cover off and inspect? Anyone with this mileage ever have to replace the chain and gears or tensioner?
Thanks in advance

There is a tensioner pulley and an idler pulley. Did you check both?

Take off the belt and listen again. If the noise stops then change both idler and tensioner pulley's if you can not remember them being changed at all.
