Question 4L60E no shift to 3rd beyond 2nd gear

My 2002 GMC Envoy 4.2 is suddenly not shifting beyond 2nd gear.
I've read some threads here which state this may be a problem with a bad solenoid.

Took the vehicle to a tranny specialist yesterday. Of course they want to install one of their factory rebuilt transmissions for approx $2500.

I explained that-- through research-- i understand it could simply be a bad solenoid.

GARAGE CLAIM: There are two solenoids. One for first. one for 2nd. Neither are throwing codes.

This does not seem in-line with what i've read here. i'd rather not drop $2500 which i don't have, if the problem is likely something inexpensive.

#1 Is it not symptomatic of a bad solenoid that the 4L60E will not shift to 3rd?
#2 What symptoms might i have noticed if it was instead the 3-4 Clutch Pack?

I know it's been awhile, but I'm experiencing the same with my 2008. 1st and 2nd gear are fine, nothing beyond that.

Im having the same problem with 2005 envoy . Yesterday i put in both shift solenoids and tcc solenoid and new filter and fluid. Put it all back together and test drove. Still no difference. I am an auto dealer and have already sold the vehicle. Bad situation! Im trying to help the people that bought it. Dont think it needs a new transmission because it happened all of a sudden. Ive read pages and pages of threads but i am lost and dont know what to do. Reading all these threads just confuses me more. I really need someones help! Thanks

Mine happens with no warning also. I originally thought about the shift solenoids but if one of them went bad you would get a code for shift solenoid A or shift solenoid B. I was experiencing the same symptoms as everyone else. First and second gear are flawless. Reverse is flawless. But when the transmission tries to shift into third it is like going into neutral. Even if you shift it manually. If you are going slow enough and you put your foot to the floor it will drop back into second gear. Mine is currently at Diablo Formula racing getting the transmission rebuilt. Andy says it it was a very common issue and the 3-4 clutch pack is what the problem is and when he rebuilds them he uses upgraded parts. You could take it to an actual transmission shop and have them put replacement parts in that are off-the-shelf stuff from GM but if you don't upgrade the parts that break, you could be looking at the same issue again in the future. 2500 to $3,000 is is about right for a transmission rebuild

When the 4l60 trans shifts from 1st to 2nd and then when it tries to go to 3rd the engine just revs up, the 3-4 clutch has failed and the trans needs to be rebuilt. Sorry.

I have been a transmission rebuilder for 35 years. I have never seen a solenoid problem cause a 4l60 to not shift to third. If a solenoid is shorted or open, the computer sees this and locks the trans into third gear, which is fail safe. If the trans shifts from first to second normally but the motor just revs up when it should be in third, the 3-4 clutch has failed.

Same Problem

My 2005 GMC Envoy is having the same problem and will not shift from 2nd to 3rd. I have gotten an estimate and it is roughly $2,000 to have the transmission rebuilt. My car has 130,000 miles on it right now, is it worth it to do the repairs if I am wanting to get another 1-2 years out of it? The engine is fine but I have had to do some tire and axle repairs recently. I haven't had any other major problems with it but that worries me going forward that something else could go wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

The 3-4 clutch is fried. Needs to be rebuilt.

I know a guy that runs his own shop and I would trust to do any mechanical work on my vehicles. He specializes in transmissions. He gave me a price of $1350 for a rebuild. I think that price would be hard to beat.
