Transmission, front diff ? ? ?

Hey guys and gals,

Well since my last post my SS has since froze in it's tracks. It all happened while pulling out from a dead stop at a decent throttle...sounded kinda like it spun a bearing somewhere...made a loud grinding/metal on metal/high pitched sound ..then continued to roll backwards. I put the AWD SS in park and it started to roll again, so the ebrake had to be engaged to keep it from rolling away. I shut it off, then re-cranked it and pulled it into drive to hear that God awful grinding metal on metal sound yet again, and it would not move, no gears whatsoever. So I shifted into park and it sounded sorta like it would if you shifted into park while driving down the road...terrible sound. So what is it sounding like folks? Front diff failure, the transmission ? whats your thoughts?

AWD 109,xxx miles...front and rear diff fluids changed about 2,000 miles ago.

Because of the noise you hear, I would guess front diff. Whatever the problem is, you are going to need your most reputable shop to look after it from here.

Anyone know why I'm hearing this terrible noise from just putting the truck into gear? I would think I would have to accelerate for this motion to occur...

I just had this happen to me last week. It ended up being my front right axle and half shaft had all the teeth worn off. I was just glad it was still under warranty.

Prfontaine...would your ss still drive or did you have to have it towed? I'm re-thinking (wishful thinking) that it's just my cv axle too...

I had to have it towed. Every gear I put it in was nothing.... The dealer had it back to me in under a week..

And all that was wrong was a CV axle on the passenger side ?

They said that on the new AWD systems if 1 wheel spins free the system shuts down.
