Are there any 'favorite' MPG mods?
I'm curious about any favorite MPG mods. Obviously, I know driving with a light foot helps significantly, but I'm also curious about any go-to mods to increase MPG a tad. I'm still on my first tank in my 'new' '08 LT I6 4x4 (190 miles at half a tank so far), and I'm currently giving it the SeaFoam treatment, so I don't know what's considered normal for my personal TB and driving habits just yet. If I can boost my mileage by a couple M's per G and increase power a bit with a couple bolt-ons, I may consider doing some of those mods.
Here are some themes I've noticed just browsing:
1) CAI - Some folks seem to notice a bit better response, slightly more power, and ~1 more MPG with a CAI. Others seem to notice absolutely no difference at all. Others yet claim it hurts things and wears your engine out faster due to poor filtration, but I have yet to see any evidence that supports that claim.
2) Electric Fans - I've seen reports of 1-2 MPG boost by switching to electric fans. I've considered doing this on my F-250 for the same reason, but I've never got around to it since it's not my daily driver.
3) Tune. I'm not really sure all the details on this one, but reports claim a 1-2 MPG boost. Does this involve an aftermarket ECU or reprogramming the current ECU? Is this something I can do myself? I know the Ford guys have a plug-n-play tune available for some of their pickups that are highly regarded and (supposedly) boost MPG by a couple clicks while increasing power at the same time. I don't know if there's something similar for the TB?
If my research is correct, doing all 3 of these could gain about 4 mpg, which is about a 20% increase, so fairly significant. Plus, I'd be getting some added power to boot!
