cannot unlock tailgate

Coming back from a trip, I tried to open the tailgate to load luggage. I have tried to unlock using the fob and unlock buttons on both front doors but with no luck. My trailblazer has rusted thru below the latch handle. Do you think this is electrical or mechanical? I can open the glass. Is there a way to get at the lock from inside?

Most probably electrical. Common problem with the TB if you search the forums for “Lift Gate Module”. How handy are you with electrical circuits?

Since there is evidence of rust in the area, I say it is mechanical. The OP will need to access the mechanism thru the small access hole in the plastic panel and try to move the bell cranks to release the main latch. Once the liftgate is open, he can remove the plastic panel and inspect the latch mechanism.

Same thing happened to me awhile back. I could hear the module “unlocking” from the fob but no dice when attempting to open the tailgate. I found a video on YouTube showing how to use the access hole on the inside of the tailgate to manually pop it open. Mine was rusted, not horribly but apparently enough. So I picked up a used actuator on eBay for about $35 with shipping and haven’t had an issue since. The install was 10 minutes total in the driveway.
