04 Rack and Pinion problem----solved

04 5.3L Envoy...Been trying to replace the rack and pinion. On my 3rd 1 so its looking like the rack isnt the problem, all 3 have the same setup. I did find out there were different part numbers for the v-8 and the 6 cyl even though holding them side by side I cant see any difference . Also the part number for the v-8 is no longer available so Im having to get these from junkyards.
The problem Im having is once the rack is in place the distance between the steering shaft and the racks shaft is about 2.5"....while the coupler that bolts them together is about 5". There is no way to install it. The only thing I can come up with is the steering shaft must have dropped down some but I cant find any info on how to get it back up if thats the case. It certainly wont move by hand or light tapping, twisting or turning. Any ideas what I need to do??
